Ushakov Igor' B.

Ushakov Igor' B.  is a Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Doctor of the Russian Federation, Medical Major General of the Reserve. Igor Borisovich Ushakov is known as the competent specialist in the field of the airspace, radiation and extreme medicine and  physiology, Director of the Russian Federation State Scientific Center - the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Medial and Biological Problems, Head of the Molecular Cellular Biomedicine Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences (1992), Professor (1995), Full Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (2005), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2003), Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2013), Honoured Doctor of Russia (2004), Member of the International Astronautics Academy (2003), the Laureate of the USSR Council of Ministers' (1990) and Russian Federation Government's (2004, 2010) Prizes in the Field of Science and Technique. He is also the experienced organizer of the high scale research implementation within the frameworks of the state programs.

The main lines of I.B. Ushakovs’ research until 90-s were issues of radiation physiology and hygiene. At this time, he became an acknowledged expert in the field of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation effects on central nervous system and organism.

Ushakov I.B. developed and published conception of individual resistance and reactivity of animal and human organism, as well as methods of effects extrapolation from animals to human.

I.B. Ushakov in cooperation with V.N. Karpov were the first to describe in 1997 typical hyperbolic relationship probability contraction of neurological disorders of animals in an «intensity –duration» of irritating ionizing effects system of axes. By these principles, he developed a method of equivalent and effective levels separated and combined extreme effects in any moment of time determination. He explored the important role of change of blood-brain barrier and brain water-salt metabolism under the conditions of radiation exposure and other factors.

I.B. Ushakov in the following studies with humans proved new physiological approach in research of extreme factors effects - modeling of the human syndrome- concordant conditions, which is capable of reliability studying of «human-vehicle» system (Council of Minister's prize in 1990). On the base of surveys in Chernobyl (1986-1987), he proposed a new relevant academic field - human ecology of hazardous occupations.

I.B. Ushakov researches problem of human and animal stress, also adaptation to environmental and occupational stressors mechanism. He is author of original cascade scheme of psycophysiological risks of human in conditions of separated and combined effects of flights and life activities in complex «human - vehicle - environment» systems.

I.B. Ushakov proposed a definition and published physiological characteristics of particular kind of stress - the stress of death-hazardous situations. The stress of death-hazardous situations is not entirely correctly modeled in animal experiments. The stress of death-hazardous situations is a fundamental biomedical issue, as it involves a terminal process in human mentality, physiology of the most important body systems and health.

Сonsiderable number of scientific works of this period he combined from the perspective of riskometric approach, effective especially during long term occupancy in changed conditions with the cumulation of physic and psychic factors (model experiments of interplanetary travels).

Igor Borisovich was Ph.D. thesis mentor for 25 Doctor of Science thesis and 31 Ph.D. thesis. In 2005-2010, he was a head of the Department of aviation and cosmic medicine of the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. He is an author of 488 scientific works, among them 8 monographs and 25 patents.

Currently, he is the chief research scientist in the A.I. Burnazyan Federal Medical and Biophysical Center.
