I.K. Romanovich was born in 1958, graduated in 1985 with merit from the Military-Medical Academy after S.M. Kirov, Navy Physician Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences (2003), Professor (2009), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2016), Academician (Full Member) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2019), Deputy Chairman of the Russian Scientific Commission on Radiological Protection, Deputy Chairman of the Northwest Advisory Board on the Association Between Afflictions and Radiation Exposure.
I.K. Romanovich served in the Armed Forces from 1985 to 1990 in the sanitary and epidemiological units of the Pacific Fleet. In 1990–1993, he completed the PhD studies at the Department of the Naval and Radiation Hygiene of the Military-Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov. Later I.K. Romanovich served in different positions: from the research fellow to the head of the research department of the All-Army Register of the Military-Medical Academy after S.M. Kirov. After being discharged from the Armed Forces, he worked as the deputy director for scientific work at the North-West Scientific Center of Hygiene and Public Health (2001–2003), since 2003 – as the director of the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Radiation Hygiene after Professor P.V. Ramzaev.
During his work in the Military-Medical Academy, main scientific interests of I.K. Romanovich were focused on the evaluation of the impact of radiation on the health of the military personnel who participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. Since 2003, the main areas of scientific activity of I.K. Romanovich are the improvement of sanitary legislation in the field of radiation safety of the public, assessment of radiation risks, development of system of nuclear and radiation terrorism countermeasures. Drafts of the main Russian legislative acts on the radiation protection of the public - NRB-99/2009 and OSPORB - 99/2010, were prepared under his supervision. I.K. Romanovich supervised the scientific and methodological support to the facilities and organizations of Rospotrebnadzor for the provision of the radiation safety of the public of the Far Eastern regions of the Russian Federation from the consequences of the accident at the Japanese Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant. I.K. Romanovich is the co-author of the analyzed and published materials on the emergency response of Rospotrebnadzor facilities to the accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant as well as the data on the post-accidental radiation surveys of the Far Eastern regions of the Russian Federation and the coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean.
I.K. Romanovich supervised the scientific and methodological support and participated in the activities for the ensuring of the radiation safety of participants and guests of the games during the preparation and holding of the summer student Universiade in Kazan in the Russian Federation in 2013, the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014 and Football World Championship in 2018.
I.K. Romanovich is the author of more than 260 scientific publications, including 14 books; the Hirsch index is 19. He was the main supervisor of two doctoral and six PhD theses.
